About the team

A dynamic multidisciplinary team from Wageningen University combines expertise in Food Technology (product design), Biotechnology (process technology), Sustainable Business and Innovation (consumer behavior and marketing), and Plant Sciences (breeding). This diverse group of passionate students aims to revolutionize space nutrition by developing innovative alternative protein sources. The unique blend of skills and cutting-edge knowledge positions the group to create sustainable, nutritious, and cost-effective food solutions for long-term space exploration.

Our vision

Our long-term goal is to develop sustainable alternative protein systems using a closed-loop approach to support human life on the journey to Mars and beyond. Current space food systems face significant limitations, including short shelf life, lack of sustainability, low protein content, and heavy reliance on resupply missions. These challenges make long-term missions’ resource-intensive, unsustainable, and costly.

Our solution

Our solution utilizes hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria and maggots to create high-protein food in a self-sustaining system. By integrating this approach, we can reduce dependence on Earth resupply missions, increase access to fresh food, and establish a scalable, sustainable model for long-term space exploration.
