About the team

A dynamic multidisciplinary team from Wageningen University combines expertise in Food Technology (product design), Biotechnology (process technology), Sustainable Business and Innovation (consumer behavior and marketing), and Plant Sciences (breeding). This diverse group of passionate students aims to revolutionize space nutrition by developing innovative alternative protein sources. The unique blend of skills and cutting-edge knowledge positions the group to create sustainable, nutritious, and cost-effective food solutions for long-term space exploration.

Our vision

Our long-term goal is to contribute to the development of sustainable alternative protein systems to support human life on Mars with close loop approach. Current space food systems, short shelf-life, lack of sustainability, lack of protein, depend on resupply missions, and offer limited freshness. By integrating such solutions, we can reduce dependence on Earth resupply missions, more possibility of fresh food, and establish a sustainable model for long-term space exploration.

Our solution

Providing alternative protein sources for astronauts through a closed-loop approach to ensure sustainable food production. This involves developing a hydrogen oxidizing bacterial combined with maggots for balance nutrition, which will be processed into protein-based structures or meals through 3D food printing technology.
